Broker Profile: George Wilkinson

Can you share a brief overview of your journey in the insurance industry and how you got started?

Like many in the industry, I stumbled into insurance by chance. My career began with a local personal lines broker, where I gained my initial exposure to the field. After a little over a year, I had the opportunity to move to their sister company, a Commercial Broker.

What motivated your decision to join Servca?

My decision to join Servca was driven by my prior experience working with the company. I was consistently impressed by Servca’s work ethic and ethos. Their expertise in specialised markets was particularly appealing, offering me a chance to expand my knowledge and skills.

What led you to specialise in Medical Malpractice?

At my previous brokerage, I managed several sectors, including Medical Malpractice. Over time, my exposure to various risks in this sector piqued my interest. This naturally led me to specialise in Medical Malpractice, where I could focus my efforts and expertise on a niche I was passionate about.

What’s the most rewarding policy you’ve placed?

One of my most challenging and rewarding placements was for a Mental Health Signpost service for the entire NHS in Wales. They faced multiple issues with their existing coverage, which had been discovered to be insufficient for their service. We successfully sourced comprehensive cover, that included backdated coverage and run-off cover for clinicians no longer working with the organization. Additionally, we improved on the existing premium and transitioned them away from discretionary cover.

What industry trends have you seen over the last year?

A positive trend I've observed is the increasing prevalence of Corporate Entity cover for companies. It's crucial that medical corporations are covered for the vicarious liability of their employees' actions. The growing awareness among clients about the importance of these covers is very encouraging.

What's a typical day like for you? Any morning rituals or habits that keep you on top of your game?

Nothing groundbreaking, I just make sure I get enough sleep and I’m good to go!

Outside of the office, what's a hobby or interest that people might be surprised to know about you?

I’m a passionate gamer, having played Counter Strike from a young age. I’ve also been building custom PCs and am constantly assisting friends to build their own machines.

In your opinion, what qualities make a great team, and how do you promote collaboration among your colleagues?

A sense of humour and a hunger within a team goes a long way. These qualities create a motivating work environment and an infection energy that’s spread around the office.

And finally, what advice do you have for individuals aspiring to work in the insurance sector? Are there any key principles or lessons you wish you had known when you started your journey?

My advice is to find a sector that truly interests you and focus on it. The insurance industry offers a wide range of specialisations, and honing in on one that excites you will make your work more fulfilling. Personally, Medical Malpractice captured my interest, but there are numerous other sectors where you can build a rewarding career. Stay curious, seek out opportunities to learn, and immerse yourself in the areas that spark your passion.
